                 …with a broken wing
Expressions of
the Human Spirit

poems by Ronaye Hudyma

Description:

Whether contemporary, classic, or peppered with Elizabethan eloquence, this profound ensemble of 130 poems is not stationary. They move as if conducted with a maestro’s baton –fluid between the euphoria of life and love, the drama, the anguish of death and loss, with every nuance of human emotion spilling upon the pages.

They are poignant words written with the transparency of youth, gathering maturity and experience, evolving to wisdom, into the spiritual realm.

This is not just poetry. There are a million stories in each poem. Once for each of us. From the teenager discovering their individuality, the young adult challenged by relationships and the world around them, to the Elder denizens of Earth, who cherish their memories as veterans of life, this is a book to be read and reread, a keepsake to console, embrace and affirm your recognition of the truth within yourself that is already there.

THE SOUND OF GOODBYE

You turn away when I look into your eyes.

They tell the truth that you try so hard to hide.

Do you think she can take my place?

You can lie but it’s on your face.

I swear that I hear the sound of goodbye.

Is it as good as you thought that it would be?

Or do you lie in her arms and think of me?

Say no more. What’s that sound?

Do you hear someone call out loud?

I swear that I hear the sound of goodbye.

It’s the beat of my heart crying out from the pain.

It’s the sound of my tears coming down, falling like rain.

It’s voice of a memory that will not die.

It’s the echo of love. The sound of goodbye.

One of these nights she’ll leave you alone

And you’ll be the fool watching love go.

Please come back before it’s too late.

Do you hear something breaking?

It’s the beat of my heart crying out from the pain.

It’s the sound of my tears coming down, falling like rain.

It’s voice of a memory that will not die.

It’s the echo of love. The sound of goodbye.

NOT TONIGHT

Say, what’s your name, stranger?

Mine’s Lady Blue.

Say, would you mind, stranger, if I sat next to you?

Please pardon me if I’m impolite. I’m not the type.

I’m a lady, but not tonight.

Not tonight. This damsel’s in distress

So for tonight, would you help me forget?

Morning’s eyes will see the lady that I am

But not tonight. Not tonight.

You’re very kind stranger,

I don’t mind if I do.

Say, would you mind, stranger, if I lean on you?

Now what I’m asking outright ain’t lady-like,

I’ll be alone tomorrow, but not tonight.

Thanks for your gentleman ways. I’ve no regrets,

I don’t know what I should say. I’d like a cigarette.

Just one more time, hold me tight. It’s getting light.

You can leave tomorrow, but not tonight.

Not tonight. This damsel’s in distress

So for tonight would you help me forget?

Morning’s eyes will see the lady that I am

But not tonight. Not tonight.

Why fear my faithlessness

when I fear my faithfulness?

The fidelity of my heart sings of fullness–

perhaps too much–

but your cautious mind mutes the sounds.

Why change your clasp to cling?

I shall be true to you because I am true to myself

following my instinctive nature

with no cause to tempt me to do otherwise.

It is a choice.

Temptation is but a clock on a golden chain swinging before my eyes

 at arms reach–easily grasped.

At what price, sacrifice?

Gold is rich. Gold is heavy.

SILLY GIRL

Silly girl, love’s a game that only grownups play.

Silly girl, you never learned to act your age.

Only children still believe in fairy tales–that fairy tale that he loved you.

Silly boy, telling stories that were only lies.

Silly boy kissed all the girls and made you cry.

Even children don’t believe that hearts are toys.

That silly boy broke yours.

You were something to play with, silly lady.

Easy as taking candy from a baby.

You meant nothing to him so stop pretending.

Silly girl, you still believe in happy endings.

In your world of wishing wells and fantasy

Love is real although it’s only make-believe.

Every child has growing pains. It’s part of just

Growing up, silly girl.

FINALE

Icicles form on your lips,

hang from your words with the pall of Winter,

numbing me with frozen fingers

leaving my heart lovelorn, bereft and broken.

Your hurried footsteps echo on cold concrete

resounding with “goodbye”,

My spirit, deadened

as the night, no longer young

fades to black.

EPILOGUE

With no warning,

your icy words ambush me and I shiver;

Silent, strident sounds assailant with death

threatening the imperishable soul,

apologetic with fear

screaming victory once again.

My mind’s heart knows not such words.

An arduous expression creases your brow,

dulls your eyes, your sentiment.

How difficult to say it,

remembering how I lay with you,

naked in mind, naked in body

as my tears unseen, fall on the lustrous tree of love–

which you’ve yet to understand.

All because…

someone else now completes you,

 fills the whole

of which I have no part.
